The aspect of battery safety in mobility was the focus of the BATTMobil2 project. Building on extensive preliminary work, the primary aim was to improve the description of the failure behavior in battery simulation models on various scales under different mechanical loads and to investigate the electrical-mechanical behavior. In detailed models, the deformation behavior in different load cases (e.g. bending, indentation) was essentially modeled by describing the corresponding behavior of each individual component. Special focus was placed on the adequate description of the failure behavior (e.g. node separation or damage). A suitable material model (tension: von Mises-based plasticity, compression: elliptical yield surface) was developed in order to take into account the transverse isotropy (special directional dependence of a material), which is represented in the detailed model by explicitly considering the layer structure, in the homogenized substitute model as well. This means that the deformation states under crash-relevant mechanical loads can now be mapped more accurately with comparatively little numerical computational effort. In addition, the insulation behavior of the separator foil was investigated, which is essential for the electrical short-circuit behavior of Li-ion cells. To this end, measurements were carried out on elementary cells using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). This enabled the objectives of the project to be achieved.
