Sustainability assessment of recycling processes
The decoupling of natural resource use from human well-being is an essential element in the transition to a sustainable future. One way towards this goal is the circularity of materials by recycling. Anyway, recycling technologies can include e.g. high energy demand, toxic chemicals, and dangerous working conditions. For the development of sustainable recycling technologies, assessing the social, economic and environmental impacts of technological advances are necessary. This talk demonstrates the novel application of existing economic and ecological assessment methods as well as outlines a new social risk assessment method developed specifically for evaluating emerging recycling technologies.
Prof. Dr. Gesa Beck is a professor of Environmental Process Engineering, the Director of the Institute for Applied Resource Strategies (IARS) and the Head of the Laboratory for Sustainable Waste and Wastewater Technologies at the SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences. She is also a founder and managing director of ABCircular GmbH, a consulting and training company active in the recycling of electronics and compound wastes. She conducted both her studies and her PhD research in physical chemistry.
