Sustainability Talks: Spinning Out of Fraunhofer – How Building Data is the Missing Link to Sustainability in Real Estate

Buildings account for a major share of European emissions, yet most of them lack even the most basic structured data about their physical condition. How can we sustainably transform the real estate sector if we are missing the very foundation?

The INATECH and the Leistungszentrum Nachhaltigkeit Freiburg cordially invite you to the next edition of the interdisciplinary lecture series Sustainability Talks.

In this talk, Bastian Stahl (CEO & Co-founder of bimeto GmbH, a spin-off from Fraunhofer IPM) highlights the crucial role of building data in real estate sustainability.

About the Talk

Drawing from years of applied research at Fraunhofer IPM, the talk traces the journey from academic insight to a market-ready product. Against the backdrop of strict ESG regulations, stranded asset risks, and Europe’s renovation imperative, the presentation makes the case that sustainability in real estate is, at its core, a data problem—and shows how Building Information Modeling (BIM) serves as an analytical data layer turning physical buildings into queryable, interoperable data assets.

Key Highlights:

  • The Origin: How a single unmeasured door opening became the starting point for founding a Fraunhofer spin-off.

  • Reimagining BIM: Turning physical structures into queryable, actionable data assets.

  • ESG & Decarbonization: Why achieving climate targets and navigating Europe's renovation wave fundamentally depend on structured data
