Insights from Industrial Practice - Lecture with Andreas Abt on 2019/02/06

As part of the interdisciplinary Sustainability Talks, Andreas Abt, CTO Trumpf Hüttinger, will give a lecture in Freiburg on the Topic "Insights from Industrial Practice: The Role of Systems Engineering for Sustainability".

Engineering is challenged by high innovation rates, constant product cost pressure and increasing complexity of products. Systems engineering as method and discipline set out to get complexity under control. However, faced with conflicts of objectives finding the right tradeoff appears to be challenging. In the past the tradeoffs were inbetween product functions, product cost and reliability. With sustainability entering the stage the conflicts of objectives become even bigger. Sustainability as a holistic principle with its three equal objectives in ecology, society and economy is hardly achievable. The talk will present the ecological, social and economic consequences of system engineering decisions in a recent product development project of TRUMPF Hüttinger and will highlight how policy needs to support that sustainability can finally be achieved.

Time: Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 5.30 p.m.
