The manufacturing and operation of building structures significantly contribute to global warming and resource consumption. However, life-cycle assessment (LCA) still needs improvement especially in the (early) design phases of building structures where important decisions are made. At this point, building information modeling (BIM) is an appropriate method to overcome the adjacent challenges and deficits as it allows for a life-long digital availability and use of the relevant data in simulations and design processes. In this talk, the state of the art for BIM and LCA for building structures are introduced and combined so that current and future development needs can be pointed out for a fruitful discussion.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Nöldgen is a professor at the Institute of Constructive Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Technology at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. He is also a member of both the buildingSMART-Regionalgruppe Rheinland and the Ingenieurkammer Bau NRW.
