In 2018, some of the world’s leading universities and research organizations joined forces under the leadership of the Global Resilience Institute at Northeastern University (Boston, USA) and Fraunhofer EMI (Freiburg, Germany), and launched the Global Resilience Research Network (GRRN).
The growing complexity and interdependence of the systems we depend on and the potential damage shocks and disruptions can cause when these systems are hit drives the GRRN agenda to develop applicable tools and applications to increase the resilience of infrastructures and societal systems. Resilience can be understood as a way of successfully dealing with complexity by maximizing the adaptive capacity. The question is how to engineer adaptive capacity into technical as well as socio-technical systems? Especially, if you need to take phenomena like emergence, cascading effects and multiscale coupling of networks into account.
At the same time, research has shown that resilience stories are written by people. If we look at natural disasters, terror attacks or major accidents, it is the creativity, flexibility and talent to improvise when people find themselves in completely unforeseen and unforeseeable circumstances that allows them to thrive. How can people’s capacity to deal with disruptions be strengthened? Together with a global audience, the GRRN wants to discuss these and other questions with stakeholders from academia, industry and society at its 2nd Annual GRRN Summit, held from April 10 to 11, 2019 in the city of Freiburg, Germany.
The organizers are happy to invite all those dealing with resilience from all different kinds of perspectives to the Summit. More information can be found here: www.grrnsummit.org

GRRN Young Researchers Award
GRRN is proud to introduce the GRRN Young Researchers Award. We would like to invite all young scientists working in the broad field of resilience research to apply for the GRRN Young Researchers Award. Successful applicants will be invited to the GRRN Summit (no participation fee), including reimbursement of travel costs. At the GRRN Summit, the best applicant will be publicly announced and rewarded with the GRRN Young Researches Trophy. More information, including eligibility criteria and application process can be found under www.grrnsummit.org/grrn-award.
