HoloQS-FC

»Digital holographic measurement system for
100% inline quality assurance of
fuel cell and electrolyser components«

Funding period: 2025 until 2027

Type of project: transfer project

Project partners:

In recent years, Fraunhofer IPM has succeeded in expanding the existing digital holographic measurement technology as part of industrial and publicly funded projects so that it can also be used to measure large-area components such as bipolar plates (BPP) or carbon-coated membranes (CCM) over their entire surface with sub-micrometre accuracy and at sub-second intervals. This was made possible by findings from the LZN projects ‘LongPower’ and ‘LongPower 4.0’, among others.

The industrial success of the system would enable complete - and above all early - quality assurance in the production of critical components of fuel cell and electrolyser components for the first time, and thus a significant increase in energy and resource efficiency in production as well as opportunities to increase the efficiency of the finished fuel cells and electrolysers.

As part of the HoloQS-FC transfer project, the measuring system is to be used on flexible handling systems such as industrial robots, which is almost absolutely essential for use in the production of electrolyser components in particular. In addition, the final qualification of the system to comparable standards - in particular with regard to operation on a robot - is to take place. The first simple materials for marketing the system already exist. However, there is a lack of reliable comparative measurements for a more effective public presentation and, in particular, marketing and transfer to alternative fields of application, such as battery production. Once these are available, market-specific product sheets and a promotional film can be produced to reach a broader target group.
