Chemical modification of fiber-matrix interfaces for enhancing the strength and durability of lightweight construction materials

Sustainable materials such as glass or carbon fiber reinforced plastics offer many advantages for lightweight construction due to their low specific weight and high stiffness and strength. However, the bonding of fibers and matrix is often problematic. The aim of the pilot project "Chemical modification of fiber-matrix interfaces for enhancing the strength and durability of lightweight construction materials" is therefore the improvement of the properties of fiber-reinforced plastics by means of targeted modification of the interfaces between fiber and matrix. The surface reactions applied in this case are equally applicable to various fiber matrix systems, which makes a modular design of the composite material consisting of fibers and matrix possible.
