Sustainability Center participates in successful Cluster Initiative

The University of Freiburg was successful with two cluster initiatives in the Excellence Competition to promote cutting-edge research at German universities under the title "Strategy of Excellence". The Sustainability Center is participating in an initiative in the field of materials research.

The University of Freiburg has achieved an important success in the ongoing excellence competition for excellence clusters, i.e. international beacons of research: It can submit two full proposals to the funding line “Excellence Cluster”. “Our outstanding scientists scored points with their cluster sketches and secured us an important stage victory. The promotion of excellence over the past ten years and our broad base of collaborative research have paid off. Two of our new applications were successful. We are very proud that we can now further expand our strengths in the area of biological signaling research with CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies – and that we can enter the second round of the competition with another internationally competitive research focus in materials research – Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS). We will do everything we can to ensure that our cluster proposals will be successful in further competition”, says Rector Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer.
The cluster initiatives must submit their full proposals by February 21, 2018. The decision on which proposals will ultimately be successful will be made on September 27, 2018. The new excellence clusters funding will start on January 1, 2019.

Cluster Initiatives at University of Freiburg

Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Materials Systems (livMatS)
The cluster initiative has set its goal as to develop bio-inspired materials systems that can adapt to a wide variety of environments and supply themselves with clean energy. The initiative is based on the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bio-Inspired Technologies (FIT) and the University's Freiburg Material Research Center (FMF) as well as on the Sustainability Center, founded in cooperation with the five Freiburg Fraunhofer Institutes. CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies
CIBBS builds on the scientific works of the BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies, an excellence cluster funded since 2007. The initiative will develop strategies to precisely control biological signalling processes in order to make it possible to translate the findings from the basic research into new innovations.
